Managing Partner, Matthew Haverstick, joins fellow law firm leaders in discussing the hope that Mayor-elect Cherelle Parker’s efforts will help people feel more comfortable in Center City, and bolster efforts to bring personnel back to the office. Although law firms have implemented return to work policies and continue to encourage people to come into the office, safety concerns remain outside of the firms’ control.

“[There is] a perception that … Center City and the business district are not safe,” Haverstick said. “That has to be one of the things that needs to be looked at right away … not at the expense of the city, but just from the business-specific perspective.”

Haverstick continued, noting that he hopes Parker can spark some enthusiasm among commuters.

“Coming into the office on the train and talking to my friends at other firms, it seems the business environment in general is in a period of malaise. … It’s not that there isn’t work … nobody seems excited about being in Philly,” Haverstick said. “Philadelphia needs a cheerleader and someone to get [people] excited about the city again. … I hope she can be that person.”
